TiVo coming to Canada?

Tivo’s been here on the HTF blog a lot lately with bad news, now there is a bit of good news or indifferent news depending on your outlook.  It looks like Tivo has finally made some tangible steps toward providing its service to Canada.  There are reports that the newest software release of the tivo box allows Canadian postal codes to be entered into the equipment.  No official announcement has been made yet but it has been rumored for some time that tivo was coming to Canada soon.

Now the question is will opening up to Canada help save the long suffering company?  After being dumped by direcTV it’s no secret they’ve had their share of problems.  Bringing in Canadian customers will at least help mitigate some of the damage.  Will TiVo make an impact up here?  Hard to say, but it could be too late, a lot of people already have PVR.  Even if TiVo is better than the cable based PVR services there needs to be some incentive to switch or it’s unlikely the mainstream will bother upgrading from that buggy Motorola PVR they’re using from Rogers Cable.
