What gauge speaker wire should I use for ceiling speakers?
For runs up to 50ft, 16-gauge (AWG 16) speaker wire is sufficient for 8-ohm residential ceiling speakers. For runs of 50–100ft, step up to 14-gauge to minimize resistance losses. For 70V commercial systems, wire gauge matters less because the constant-voltage architecture compensates for cable resistance — 18-gauge is commonly used in commercial installs for runs up to 200ft. Never use speaker wire rated for direct burial or plenum-rated runs unless required by local building code (plenum-rated wire, CL-P or CMP designation, is required in HVAC air-handling ceiling spaces per most US building codes).
