Do short throw projectors need a special screen?
Standard short throw projectors (0.4:1 to 1.5:1 throw ratio) work with any flat screen surface — white wall, standard matte-white screen, or a gain screen. They don’t require the specialized UST-ALR screens that ultra-short-throw projectors need. That said, a screen with a gain of 1.1–1.3 will increase perceived brightness and is worth considering if your ambient light situation is borderline. A gain above 1.3 introduces hot-spotting (center of the image appears brighter than edges) at typical viewing distances and should be evaluated carefully. ALR screens that are designed for standard throw projectors exist (rejecting ceiling light from above rather than the oblique-angle rejection needed for UST), and they’re worth considering in living rooms with overhead lighting.
