Does the Z906 support Dolby Atmos?
No. The Z906 decodes Dolby Digital (standard) and DTS, both of which are standard 5.1 surround formats. Dolby Atmos and DTS:X require either an object-based audio decoder (found in modern AV receivers and soundbars) and height channel speakers, or processing-based virtualization. The Z906’s internal decoder was designed in 2011 and predates widespread Atmos content delivery. If Atmos is a priority, you need a different system — see the Sony HT-S60 or HT-A8 above, or a full AV receiver with Atmos decoding paired with a 5.1 surround sound speaker system.
How loud can the Z906 get?
Manufacturer-stated peak output is 1,000W, with 500W RMS sustained. In practice, in a 10×12ft room at the listening position, the system reaches reference-level volume well before 70% on the master control — the limiting factor is satellite speaker displacement, not amplifier power. The small satellite drivers compress audibly at high volumes, losing low-midrange body. In a larger room (15×18ft or more), the system simply runs out of acoustic output at distance before reaching the perceived loudness of a receiver-driven system with 5.5-inch or larger woofer bookshelf satellites.
What’s the difference between the new and renewed Z906?
The hardware is identical — same satellites, same subwoofer, same internal amplifier and decoder. The renewed unit has been returned, inspected, and relisted, with varying levels of refurbishment depending on the seller. The key risk with renewed is the internal plate amplifier condition: it’s not externally inspectable and degraded capacitors don’t show failure symptoms until they do. For casual desktop use with limited daily hours, a verified-functional renewed unit is a reasonable cost-saving choice. For a primary system with heavy daily use, new with warranty coverage is the more defensible option.
